The Noctule plugin editing a Swift project in a JetBrains IDE

Getting started

  1. 1

    Install the plugin

From the JetBrains Marketplace, straight inside your IDE. Installation guide →

  2. 2

    Open your project

A Swift package or an Xcode workspace. Noctule finds your toolchain — Swiftly, Xcode or $PATH — on its own.

  3. 3

    Build, run and test

Run configurations are ready to go, and test results land in the IDE’s own test runner.

One IDE for every kind of Swift work

Whether Swift is your whole project or just one corner of it, Noctule brings it into the IDE you already use.

Server-side & cross-platform Swift

Build, run and test Swift packages on Linux and Windows. Noctule picks up toolchains from Swiftly, $PATH or WSL — no Mac required.

Apple platforms License

Open your Xcode workspace and keep the JetBrains ergonomics: scheme and destination pickers in the toolbar, a simulator tool window, and xcodebuild builds straight from the IDE.

What you get

The features you expect from a JetBrains IDE, for Swift.

Code insight

Completion, go to declaration and implementation, find usages, rename refactoring, type and call hierarchies, quick documentation — and more.

Swift Package Manager

Automatic detection, a “New Project” wizard, and run configurations for swift build, swift run and swift test.

Xcode projects License

Scheme and destination pickers in the toolbar, xcodebuild integration, run configurations for builds and simulator deployment, a tool window to manage simulators, and highlighting for pbxproj and Plist files.

Objective-C License

Objective-C alongside Swift, for the mixed projects that most Apple codebases really are.

Formatting & linting License

A built-in formatter, free for everyone. A license adds SwiftLint and SwiftFormat diagnostics, format on save, and completion in their configuration files.

Test runner License

Run whole suites or individual tests from the gutter and see the results in the IDE’s own test runner.

Remote development

Run the IDE backend on the machine that has your toolchain and work from anywhere. Language support and build logs follow you to the frontend.

Common questions

Do I need a Mac?

No. Swift Package Manager projects work the same on macOS, Linux and Windows. Only Xcode project support needs a Mac with Xcode installed. Even that Mac can be remote: with JetBrains remote development, the IDE backend runs on the Mac while you work from any machine.

What drives the language features?

Completion, navigation and diagnostics come from Apple’s SourceKit-LSP. The plugin itself provides syntax highlighting, IDE integration, the structure view, build integration and run configurations.

Does it really work in Android Studio?

Yes — Android Studio Panda or later, including full language-server support that other Swift plugins don’t provide. Android Studio is more opinionated about its UI than other JetBrains IDEs, though, so some features and UI elements may be restricted there.

Can I debug Swift code?

Not yet — debugging is on the roadmap. Follow the GitHub discussions to see and shape what ships next.

What does a license add?

Xcode projects, Objective-C, SwiftLint and SwiftFormat, format on save and the test runner. Everything else is free, and a 7-day trial unlocks the full set.

Where do I report issues?

The issue tracker and discussions are public on GitHub, and every release comes with a changelog.
